Welcome to the web site of the Nepean Intensive Care Unit. The Intensive Care Unit is part of the Nepean Hospital, a teaching hospital associated with the University of Sydney. The Nepean Hospital is part of the Sydney West Area Health Service and is situated at the base of the Blue Mountains, 50 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. Research
- Research at the Nepean ICU The Nepean Intensive Care Unit maintains a commitment to contributing to the delivery of quality health care to the critically ill through its active participation in research. This section of the site holds about 12 pages detailing the research efforts of the Unit .
Education
The Nepean Critical Care Echo (NCCE) aims to promote the use of echocardiography in the intensive care unit and emergency. It organizes short practical courses in echocardiography. Interested individuals are welcomed to receive hands-on training with us on a short-term basis.

This one-day practical RACE course is specifically tailored made for Emergency Physicians. The course is developed in conjunction with Emergency Physicians and is specifically targeted at their special needs. The course will cover pericarial effusion and tamponade, left and right ventricular functions, preloads and pleural effusions. It you want to learn how to perform quick echo and to review the echo qualitatively, this maybe the course that suits you. The next RACE course will be held on 17 May 2008. 15th Congress Asian-Pacific Association of Critical Care Medicine (2008) in conjunction with the 33rd Australian & New Zealand Annual Scientific Meeting on Intensive Care and 14th Australian & New Zealand Paediatric ad Neonatal Intensive Care Medicine will be held on 30th October - 2nd November 2008 in Sydney. Held on a regular basis the Leura Critical Care Echo course will be held as a pre-congress meeting to Asia Pacific Critical Care 2008 Congress in October 2008 rather than Februrary as in the past. This course is designed for both echo beginners and advanced users. The beginners echo course is combined with the Annual Philips Echo Course. Partial support for both these courses is provied by Philips and GE. Designed for intensivists, critical care physicians and trainees, these courses are aimed at enthusiasts from the Asian Region as well as Australia and New Zealand. Specialist Critical Care Nursing Roles
- Data Management at Nepean ICU The Nepean Intensive Care Unit maintains a commitment to the accurate collection and utilisation of data within the Intensive Care Unit. Not simply a team which collects data, the nursing led team uses the data to assist with the management of resources and planning within the ICU.
- ICU Liaison Service The Nepean Hospital Intensive Care Unit has introduced an exciting new role to improve patient care and follow-up post discharge from the unit. Also details of the Liaison Clinical Nurse Consultant role.
