Welcome to the web site of the Nepean Intensive Care Unit. The Intensive Care Unit is part of the Nepean Hospital, a teaching hospital associated with the University of Sydney. The Nepean Hospital is part of the Sydney West Area Health Service and is situated at the base of the Blue Mountains, 50 kilometres west of the Sydney CBD. This one-day practical RACE course is specifically tailored made for Emergency Physicians. The course is developed in conjunction with Emergency Physicians and is specifically targeted at their special needs. The course will cover pericardial effusion and tamponade, left and right ventricular functions, preloads and pleural effusions. It you want to learn how to perform quick echo and to review the echo qualitatively, this maybe the course that suits you. All participant will be given a copy of the RACE Handbook. Extra copies can be purchased at $33 (incl. GST) each. Click here to find the next available RACE courses. The RACE Doppler Physics module: All RACE participants will be given a username and password to download a copy of the Doppler Echocardiography study notes. All participants are encouraged to attempt a short quiz. Click here to enter the Doppler Physics module page. The RACE Handbook is produced to supplement the RACE course and is intended to be used as a quick reference for 2D transthoracic echocardiography. The latest (2008) edition covers the standard views, knobology, assessments of left and right heart functions, cardiac tamponade and more.

A 4 days Leura Critical Care Echo course will be held on 29th Aug - 1st Sep 2009. This course covers the basic critical care echocardiography and advanced echocardiography. The course is designed for intensivists, emergency physicians and anaesthetists. The details and registration form will be available here. The Nepean Critical Care Echo (NCCE) aims to promote the use of echocardiography in the intensive care unit and emergency. It organizes short practical courses in echocardiography. Interested individuals are welcomed to receive hands-on training with us on a short-term basis. Due to the overwhelming applications, we have been fully booked in 2009.

Survey on the teaching commitments in the medical school curriculum by Intensivists
The objectives of this survey are:-

- Determine extent and depth of Intensive Care medical student teaching
- Ascertain the level of commitment Universities have to teaching Intensive Care medicine

- Data Management at Nepean ICU The Nepean Intensive Care Unit maintains a commitment to the accurate collection and utilisation of data within the Intensive Care Unit. Not simply a team which collects data, the nursing led team uses the data to assist with the management of resources and planning within the ICU.
- ICU Liaison Service The Nepean Hospital Intensive Care Unit has introduced an exciting new role to improve patient care and follow-up post discharge from the unit. Also details of the Liaison Clinical Nurse Consultant role.
